ENTER Upon entering the LATAH VALLEY worship celebration, you can expect the aroma of jazz in the air. Jazz is a uniquely-crafted American art form. But an interesting dynamic of this particular style of music includes lots of improvisation. And improvisation, some would say, is fairly universal. For example, if you can imagine a theme to a certain song, such as “You Are My Sunshine,” Jazz allows us to vary things up and to explore a full range of emotions, which may include some darkness. In this way, LATAH VALLEY Jazz will epitomize the invitation to greet one another, to pray and perhaps to hear something utterly authentic. ENCOUNTER During this segment of the worship celebration, the wild stories and idiosyncratic images of the Bible will be front and center. We believe that the person of Jesus—Jesus of Nazareth—provides us with the key to interpreting and understanding the written words of the Holy Scriptures. So, with children, youth and adults we will constantly allow for and encourage questions. The pastor will preach, teach, but also help to facilitate an interactive dialogue with those who gather. That’s right. At a certain time in the worship, you can stop what’s going on and ask a question. It promises to be a compelling encounter indeed. EXPERIENCE The flow of worship in the Christian tradition always leads to the experience of the Holy Spirit. This reference shouldn’t necessarily make anyone feel uncomfortable. At LATAH VALLEY we don’t want to indulge individuals who want to fly off the handle in their own privatized expression of faith. No one will be encouraged or forced to say or do anything ‘weird.’ But through a mixture of silence, soft music, intense story-telling, and prayers, we will leave room for God’s Spirit to make contact. And perhaps if that happens to you—that personal experience may be something in which we all share as a community. EXUDE Finally, we’ll be preparing to leave. But another way of interpreting the act of walking out the door is that we’ll be sent. The God who called us to gather at 10 a.m. now scatters us at approximately 11:15 a.m. Before departing, however, it would be great for you to shake a hand of someone whom you don’t know. Others may be so bold as to give you an appropriately affectionate hug. You might also want to grab a cup of coffee or tea and hang out a while. We’ll provide some announcements about various and upcoming events and you’ll want to hear the summary point that Pastor Scott will give at the very, very end. Until we meet again next week, the hope of LATAH VALLEY is that you will exude the intriguing possibility that God, in the person of Jesus Christ, may show up at any moment. Amen. __________________________________________________________________
